The Goal with Food Packaging Should Be to Reuse, Reuse, and Reuse Again

People like to reuse containers.

It’s more convenient to reuse than buy new, and people like to maximize the mileage from their investments. As society continues to become more environmentally conscious, reusing products and packaging is obviously more sustainable than using something once and getting rid of it.

Unfortunately, industry has not quite caught up to consumer preferences to reuse. As we discussed in a previous article, food and packaging make up about 45 percent of all materials in U.S. landfills, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Most families would prefer to reuse food packaging and containers, and this creates an enormous opportunity for food brands that step up to meet consumer demand by creating resealable, rigid plastic containers.

Think about the advantages of offering food products in sturdy plastic packaging. Resealable containers keep food fresh and could be reused repeatedly. Because they can also be made with post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, the materials may have already been given a second life. In this case, consumers would reuse-reuse containers, so to speak.

In-mold labeling would ensure your branding lasts use after use, providing a constant reminder of your brand, even if the container is used for different types of food. Top-of-mind awareness, along with a quality product and a positive customer experience, lead to repeat purchases and customer loyalty.
